I’ve often wondered about the intersection of art and social justice. Too often when decisions are made about what’s important art is low on the list of priorities. This picture says more than words, it’s emotive, and reminds me of our ancestral roots in this country. Black mothers still being separated from their children. This is painful for African Americans as it dredges up a painful, brutal and inhumane past, that is still present today under another name-the Criminal Justice system-Prison Industrial Complex. We all have a part to play in dismantling racism. I use my voice, someone else paints pictures, someone else makes financial contributions, someone else mentors, someone else can hire-we all have a part to play. Let’s play it.
